Navigating PCOS: Shedding light on a hidden struggle

Nashita's Journey

Until just a couple of years ago, I had never even heard of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). This is despite the fact that I've been navigating the complexities of menstruation for over a decade. Reflecting on this, it's both disappointing and alarming to realize how many young women remain unaware of what's actually happening inside their bodies.

Society has long taught us to hide away our menstrual experiences, to not speak about them or in hushed tones, and, perhaps worst of all, to endure the pain as though it’s just a normal part of being a woman.

In my case, I've never had a single menstrual cycle that could be considered regular. From the very beginning, my periods were erratic, and as a young girl, I thought this was a blessing in disguise. Imagine not having to deal with the hassle of menstruation every month! Even now, there’s a part of me that feels relieved when my period doesn’t arrive as expected—no need to contend with the discomfort and inconvenience. However, learning about PCOS was a turning point.

It made me realize that my irregular periods weren’t something to dismiss or ignore; they were a signal that something wasn’t right and that I needed to seek medical advice from a gynecologist.

PCOS has introduced a range of challenges into my life, beyond just irregular periods. One of the most frustrating symptoms has been the mood swings—severe, unpredictable, and exhausting. The irregularity of my periods makes it nearly impossible to determine whether these mood swings are tied to my hormonal cycle or are simply reactions to the stressors in my life.

This journey has been eye-opening in more ways than one. It has underscored the importance of understanding our bodies and being proactive about our health. Too often, we dismiss or normalize symptoms that could be indicative of underlying issues. It’s crucial that we break the silence around menstrual health, educate ourselves and others, and seek the medical care we deserve.

PCOS may not be common, but it’s far from insignificant, and awareness is the first step towards managing it effectively.
